WHY:

The CSWE Gero-Ed Center will administer nearly $40,000 in BSW Experiential Learning (BEL) Program funding to social work programs nationwide. Made possible by the John A. Hartford Foundation, the selected CSWE-accredited BSW programs will implement hands-on opportunities with older adults for students likely to enter direct practice. The second round of this successful program promises to build on the lessons learned in the first cycle. Cycle 2 grant recipients will reach a large number of BSW students and introduce them to the rewards of working with older adults and prepare them for work in our rapidly aging society. The 10 diverse programs include a historically Black college, a faith-based program, and several schools serving rural areas. Some innovative projects include small group work with Native American elders, 30 hours of volunteer work in a senior day program, and participation on interdisciplinary health teams.
