CSWE Full Circle June 2015

Cuba and Cuban Social Work at a Time of Change

In the last few years the Council on Social Work Education has collaborated with Marazul Charters; Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work; the Council on Global Learning, Research, and Practice; and the Commission on Global Social Work Education to host faculty development trips to Havana, Cuba. Under the leadership of David Strug, CSWE delegates spent a week in Havana learning about the unique ways social work functions in a Communist society.

In light of the recent normalization of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, Strug wrote a reflective piece about the future of social work in Cuba. As noted by Strug, CSWE plans to continue building on the professional relationships established by these faculty development programs as the normalization process continues. CSWE has invited the president of the Cuban Society of Social Workers in Health Care to attend the 2015 Annual Program Meeting in Denver, CO.
