Syracuse University Hosts Policy Symposium on Homelessness
Addressing homelessness in New York State was the focus of the Syracuse University School of Social Work’s 20th Annual James L. Stone Legislative Policy Symposium held in October. The event brought together policy makers, scholars, advocates, and service providers from Onondaga County and across the state. Read more about the presentations and themes in here.

CSWE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Scholarships for Leadership Training Now Available
As a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) member, you are eligible to apply for the Harvard Institutes of Higher Education or the Higher Education Resource Services Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration. Scholarships cover 50% of the program tuition. Applications for both programs are due January 11, 2019.

Prevention Training Modules for Behavioral Health Practice
The new Educator|Resource of the Month features a resource to prepare social work students to reduce behavioral health problems in young people, with a particular focus on reducing racial and socioeconomic disparities in such problems. A set of training modules includes ready-to-use lecture notes, short videos, activities, and discussion questions. The resources were developed as part of the Grand Challenges for Social Work Initiative focusing on Ensuring Healthy Development for all Youth. 

 
 

DIVISION OF EDUCATION 

Substance Use Task Force
CSWE members are invited to participate in a task force being formed to develop a new curricular guide that addresses substance use. Social work faculty members with experience teaching about substance use, and practitioners working with populations struggling with substance use, are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is January 4, 2019. CSWE MINORITY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

MFP at 2019 SSWR Annual Conference
CSWE's Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) is hosting a lunch-and-learn session at the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Annual Conference in San Francisco, CA, on Friday, January 18, 2019, from 12:30 pm–1:30 pm for current fellows and alumni. Space for MFP alumni guests is limited, and an RSVP is required. More details and an online sign-up link will be available soon.

2018 Health Professions Week Overview
Last month CSWE participated in the 2018 Health Professions Week event, which provided high school and college students interactive opportunities to learn about 20 different health-related professions. CSWE staff chatted virtually with more than 80 students and contributed to topics related to health advocacy and financial preparedness.

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism invite prevention and treatment professionals and organizations to participate in National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) January 22–27, 2019. This week-long observance will shed light on the science behind the effects of drug and alcohol use on the brain, body, and behavior and connects students with scientists and other experts who help shatter the myths about drugs and alcohol. Geriatrics Academic Career Award Program
The Health Resources and Services Administration is accepting applications for the 2019 Geriatrics Academic Career Award (GACA) program. The purpose of the GACA program is to support the career development of junior faculty members in geriatrics at accredited schools of allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, dentistry, pharmacy, or allied health. Applications are due by January 15, 2019.


Call for Proposals: $5,000 APF Violet and Cyril Franks Scholarship
The 2019 American Psychological Foundation (APF) Violet and Cyril Franks Scholarship supports graduate-level scholarly projects that use a psychological perspective to help understand and reduce stigma associated with mental illness. The scholarship helps address research that shows stigma is a significant barrier to treatment and recovery for many of the 50 million Americans living with mental illness. The deadline for applications is May 15, 2019.
