Honoring Legacy of Carl A. Scott (1928–1986)

Carl A. Scott is remembered at CSWE as the man who guided five minority task forces and secured funding from governmental and private sources to recruit students and faculty from minority groups to social work schools. Scott, a graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC, joined CSWE as a senior consultant in 1968 and went on to single-handedly develop CSWE’s minority fellowship programs (MFP). Over the years, the MFP has provided doctoral fellowships to more than 500 African American, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Latino/Hispanic Americans, many of whom now serve as deans, directors, or faculty members in social work programs throughout the nation.

Prior to joining CSWE, Scott held positions at child and family service agencies and was director of admissions and assistant professor at New York University. Two of his most notable programs at CSWE helped prepare mental health researchers (1974) and clinicians (1979). To remember and honor Scott, in 1988 CSWE established the Carl A. Scott Memorial Lecture Series to foster knowledge of social justice and improve the well-being of individuals and communities (view the archive of lectures). In addition, the Carl A. Scott Memorial Fund annually awards two social work students who are members of minority groups with $500 book scholarships.

Looking to the future, one of the 12 Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare Grand Challenges for Social Work is to “achieve equal opportunity and justice.” The page dedicated to the challenge features resources for addressing racial and social injustices, deconstructing stereotypes, and dismantling inequality. To emphasize and expand the initiative, the theme of CSWE 2017 APM is “Educating for the Social Work Grand Challenges.” We look forward to delving into the Grand Challenges to learn from each other, grow as social work educators, advance social work education, and begin to tackle our nation’s toughest social problems.

Use #Up4theChallenge via social media to share your community’s contributions, and watch the Grand Challenges for Social Work video, featuring CSWE President and CEO Darla Spence Coffey, to learn more.
