
Tulane University School of Social Work Presents First "Do Work That Matters" Award
Tulane University’s School of Social Work's first Do Work That Matters award was presented at the school’s fall commencement on December 14, 2018. The award will be given to individuals or groups that have positively affected the New Orleans community through “doing work that matters.” The first award was presented to Derrick Tabb, a member of the Grammy Award-winning Rebirth Brass Band and a co-founder of The Roots of Music, a nonprofit that sponsors an after-school academic and music program for New Orleans school children.

Call for Proposals Open for 2019 APM
CSWE’s Call for Proposals for the 65th Annual Program Meeting (APM) in Denver, Colorado, October 24–27, 2019, is now open. The conference theme—Social Work Education: Looking Back, Looking Forward—was selected to reflect on our past and help us envision the future of social work education and practice. The proposal deadline is Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at 11:59 pm (EST). Please note, proposals must be submitted via the 2019 APM submission site.

Podcasts of Interviews With Frontline Workers Who Are Changing Communities
The first Educator | Resource of the Month for 2019 presents “Doin’ The Work: Frontline Stories of Social Change,” a podcast featuring interviews with those on the frontlines of social change—social workers, educators, and activists. Inspiring stories about their work and personal stories of how they got into this work are presented. Links to podcast episodes are provided, along with assignments and questions that can be used for class discussion.

2018–2019 Annual Survey Plans
Instead of the traditional Annual Survey usually launched in November, CSWE will survey members in spring 2019 for feedback on CSWE’s research initiatives. Programs will still be asked to report basic information, including enrollment and graduation numbers, to determine membership dues and provide links to assessment outcomes for accreditation.
Strategic Planning Survey Deadline Extended
Thank you to the 100+ members who have already completed the CSWE strategic plan survey. The deadline to complete the anonymous survey is now Sunday, January 27 at 11:59 pm (EST.) The results of this survey will help the CSWE staff, Board of Directors, and the strategic planning committee refine the strategic framework and develop the strategic priorities that will guide CSWE over the next three years (2020–2022). The application deadline for the 2019 Public Health Excellence in Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Award is February 1, 2019 at 5:00 pm (EST). The third U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) IPEC Award will showcase interprofessional efforts to positively impact community health. Call for Proposals for the 6th Annual Global Well-Being and Social Change Conference
This year's Global Well-Being and Social Change Conference, “Social Justice: Valuing Difference, Pursuing Equity, and Finding Space for Solidarity,” invites presentations (paper, roundtable, and workshop) that explore the realization of social justice and human rights and its myriad dimensions and manifestations. All proposals are due no later than January 31, 2019, by 11:59 pm (EST).
Higher Education Policy Newsletter: A View From Washington
The 116th Congress was sworn in on January 3, 2019, as Democrats took control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Republicans maintained control of the Senate. The new power split has made any resolution to the ongoing partial government shutdown even less certain. Although the financial aid and grant programs operated by the U.S. Department of Education have received funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2019, other agencies of interest to higher education, such as the National Science Foundation, remain unfunded and have either closed or partially shut down. Grant Opportunity for Psychologists Investigating Serious Emotional Disturbance
The John and Polly Sparks Early Career Grant supports early career psychologists conducting research in early intervention and treatment for serious emotional disturbance in children. The John and Polly Sparks Foundation partnered with American Psychological Foundation (APF) to empower early career psychologists to produce scientifically based research and programs that could provide models for broad-based applications across the country. APF will award three grants of up to $20,000 and one grant of up to $19,000. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2019.
