CSWE Addresses Threats Made Against HBCUs

2/3/2022
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) President and CEO Darla Spence Coffey released the following statement on the recent bomb threats made against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs):

Several HBCUs reported bomb threats this week, according to news sources, in addition to other schools that received similar threats in November 2021 and early January 2022. The safety of students, faculty and staff is paramount to CSWE and the threats of violence aimed at HBCUs, many of which have programs of social work, cannot be tolerated. We view these threats as acts of terrorism, the impacts of which go much farther than interrupting classes and closing campuses.

At this time, we ask that the social work education community come together and, as you can, provide relief, resources, and assistance to our sister schools and their communities.

We offer our support for programs at these institutions and encourage anyone to reach out to CSWE if there are ways that our team can provide support amid these threats and their investigations. CSWE stands ready to work with programs targeted with these threats should there be any impact on social work courses, accreditation, or re-affirmation efforts.
