About the Gero-Ed Track

The Gero-Ed Track, supported by the work of the Gero-Ed Center and AGESW, is one of 40 tracks at the CSWE Annual Program Meeting (APM), and was held this year in Atlanta, GA from October 27-30, 2011.

2011 Gero-Ed Track Kick-Off: Poverty and Resilience

Friday, October 28, 8:00 am - 9:30 am

For the first time since the 1950s, the poverty rate among older adults is rising. However, poverty rates of veterans are nearly half that of the general population, across every period of service. Deborah Amdur (speaker bio), Chief Consultant for Care Management and Social Work Service at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), examined this finding and the services the VA provides to ensure veterans continue to receive the highest level of care and support. AGESW Reception

The AGESW reception featured a high-energy performance by the Silver Classix Crew, Atlanta’s first senior pro-dance team, and was one of APM’s most entertaining events. Don't miss the many photos of the dancers and the audience participants!

Gero-Ed Film Festival

Gerontology Curriculum Strategies: Outcomes of Infusion and Specialization

Friday, October 28, 3:00 pm–4:30 pm

Four CSWE Gero-Ed Center initiatives utilize different infusion and specialization strategies to increase students’ gerontological competency. Designing specialized content vs. embedding content into required courses is an issue affecting many fields of social work practice. Panel members discussed their projects and the effectiveness and outcomes of each approach. Integration of Gero Field and Classroom Education: Reconsidering the Possible

Saturday, October 29, 3:00 pm-4:30 pm

The integration of field and classroom curriculum is an ongoing challenge for many social work programs. The National Health Report: Resilience and Disparities Among LGBT Older Adults

Friday, October 28, 3:00 pm–4:30 pm

Presented by Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen and colleagues, this panel highlighted findings from the first NIH-funded national study on health disparities and resilience among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults.

Federal Funding Opportunities for Social Work Training

Friday, October 28, 1:15 pm–2:45 pm

Joan Weiss from the Bureau of Health Professions at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provided an overview of federal funding opportunities that can help social workers advance in their career, increasing access to specialized education and training in fields such as geriatrics, mental health, and public health.
