- Grand Challenges Teaching Institutes (3 hours, up to 5 presenters)
For this year’s conference, the faculty development institutes (FDI’s) will focus on teaching and learning strategies for addressing one or more of the grand challenges in the classroom or field education. These teaching institutes offer an intensive opportunity for deeper exploration of how social work educators are addressing the grand challenges in all levels of social work education. Specific areas of interest include:
- new approaches or models to teaching and learning about the societal issues identified in the 12 Grand Challenges
- innovative curricular resources focused on the Grand Challenges
- transdisciplinary and interprofessional, and collaborations with classroom and field
- integrating new theories, models, frameworks, and evidence in social work teaching and learning around one or more of the Grand Challenges
- Field Directors' Development Institutes (1 hour, up to 5 presenters)
As a follow-up to the CSWE Summit on Field Education in 2014, and recognizing that progress on the Grand Challenges will require integration with our profession’s signature pedagogy, the 2017 APM conference will offer an all-day field education institute. As part of the institute, the field director development institute will advance the Grand Challenges by focusing on the six themes identified in the CSWE Summit on Field Education 2014 report through one hour sessions to showcase innovation in field education. Specific areas of interest include:
- new, innovative and nontraditional models of field education and placement sites
- innovative collaborations and communication among social work programs, agencies and field involving new funding sources
- new models for preparing students for field education
- evidence-based guidelines for defining quality field education experiences
