2012 Gero-Ed Track Kick-Off
Increasing numbers of older adults are facing addiction issues. The Gero-Ed Track Kick-Off highlighted this topic with a panel of expert speakers on hoarding, gambling, and substance abuse. Panelists include Daniel Rosen, Gail Steketee, and Kim Stansbury. The panel was moderated by Sam MacMaster. A combined PowerPoint presentation is available here.
Sam MacMaster
Sam MacMaster is Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Dr. MacMaster's research interests focus on the intersection of substance use and HIV/AIDS; and have focused specifically on the development of culturally appropriate interventions to overcome barriers to service access for underserved and incarcerated populations. He received his PhD and MSSA from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. MacMaster has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and has received funding through several federal grants.
Daniel Rosen
Daniel Rosen is Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He
received his PhD in social work and sociology, MSW, and BA in political science, all from the University of Michigan. Dr. Rosen completed a National Institute on Drug Abuse Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Substance Abuse Interdisciplinary Training Program at the University of Michigan. He is currently the recipient of a K 08 award from the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Rosen has extensive background in surveys related to organizational capacity. His current research focuses on the health and mental health service needs of vulnerable older adults, the treatment of depression in later-life for substance abusing populations, and service provision via various technologies.
Gail Steketee
Gail Steketee is Dean and Professor at the Boston University School of Social Work. She received her MSW and PhD from Bryn Mawr School of Social Work. Her scholarly work has focused on developing and testing treatments for obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders, especially hoarding symptoms which often occur among older adults. She has published over 200 articles and chapters, as well as 12 books on these topic areas. These include therapist guides, client workbooks and self-help books on Compulsive Hoarding and Acquiring. Her best-selling book Stuff: was co-authored with Dr. Randy Frost. She gives frequent lectures and workshops on hoarding and related conditions to professional and public audiences in the US and abroad.
Kim Stansbury
Kim Stansbury, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Eastern Washington University. She completed her Ph.D. in Gerontology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY and received her MSW from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL.
Dr. Stansbury is a John A. Hartford Geriatric Faculty Scholar, whose mental health literacy research is focused on elder adults’ perspective on responsible and problem/pathological gambling. She is interested in increasing senior center staff and seniors’ knowledge on gambling addiction. Additionally, Dr. Stansbury’s research also focuses on aging and mental health, clergy’s role in the provision of mental health services to elders and mental health literacy.
She teaches Diversity, Foundations in Social Work, Social Work with Groups, and Advanced Generalist Practice II, and Minority Perspective in Aging courses across the undergraduate and graduate programs. As a teacher, she enjoys discussing the importance of social work practice across the lifespan specifically with older adults.
