2013 Gero-Ed Track: Challenges of Aging in a Global Society
The 2013 Gero-Ed Track, supported by the work of the Gero-Ed Center and the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work (AGESW), was one of 40 tracks at the CSWE Annual Program Meeting (APM). 2013 Gero-Ed Track: Challenges of Aging in a Global Society Flyer
Highlights include:
- Gero-Ed Track Kick-Off Panel: Trauma across Generations: From Research to Practice (1.5 CEUs) – This session highlighted the intersection between trauma and aging in older adults who: (1) are experiencing homelessness, (2) are veterans, (3) are incarcerated, (4) die sudden deaths, or (5) have experienced cultural and historical trauma. Participants at the 2013 Gero-Ed Track Kick-Off Panel learned from expert panelists how research informs practice with these vulnerable populations. Friday, November 1 from 10:45 am – 12:15 pm CDT.
- Gerontology Education Consultants – This open forum enabled attendees to ask questions, get one-on-one support from social work faculty who have successfully gero-enriched their programs, and acquire effective strategies for infusing gerontology into their curriculum. Friday, November 1 from 4:45 pm – 5:45 pm CDT.
- AGESW Reception – The annual AGESW reception featured networking among gerontology educators, researchers, and practitioners. Attendees were dazzled by local senior talent the Dallas Tap Dazzlers’ electrifying performance! Friday, November 1 from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm CDT.
- Aging Network Workforce Development – Two sessions were devoted to the important and timely topic of developing the social work workforce for the Aging Network:
- Social Workers in the Aging Network: Workforce Implications: In this accepted paper presentation, faculty and staff from the Gero-Ed Center, the National Resource Center on Participant-Directed Services (NRCPDS), and n4a discussed the outcomes of a survey of competency-based workforce initiatives and needs within the Aging Network. - Student Competencies for the Aging Network: Strategies for Curriculum Development: This 90-minute interactive workshop, presented by Gero-Ed Center, NRCPDS, and n4a faculty and staff, focused on strategies to provide students with the competencies necessary for work in the Aging Network. Saturday, November 2 from 3:15 pm – 4:45 pm CDT.
- Integration of Gero Class and Field Curriculum – The CSWE Gero-Ed Center and the Social Work Leadership Institute of the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College hosted an innovative panel about the Integration of Gero Class and Field Curriculum. This was a unique opportunity for Gero-Ed Center and Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE) grantees to network and learn about strategies to advance the effective intersection of gero classroom and field learning. Panelists included Debra Fromm Faria, The College at Brockport, State University of New York; Adrian Kok, Dominican University; Jean Schuldberg, California State University, Chico; and Marcia Spira, Loyola University, Chicago.
