Gero-Ed Track Kick-Off Event—Sex and Intimacy After 60: Ethical and Practical Considerations
Date: Friday, November 4, 2016
Time: 10:30 am-11:30 am
Location: Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel, International 4
Today’s older adults present vastly divergent understandings of sexuality, depending upon the time period in which they were raised. This kickoff will explore this diversity and examine ethical considerations, especially as related to individuals with dementia, that influence late-life sexuality and inform social work practice with older adults. The distinctive challenges confronted by LGBT elders and by those living in long-term care facilities will be considered. Finally, practical considerations such as age-related changes in sexual response and activity, adaptive devices designed to enhance sexual experience and accommodate physical limitations, medication side effects, the risk of sexually transmitted disease, and strategies for talking about sex with older adults will be discussed. 1 CE hour available through the Approved Continuing Education Program offered by CSWE (CE registration required).
