Early Dementia and an Older Adult Teaching Module

This teaching video illustrates an initial screening for detection of early dementia with an older man and the problems typically associated with early stage dementia: getting lost, executive function impairment, apathy, and frustration. The video is divided into three sections: An introductory interview with the client, the Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE), and Activities of Daily Living questions. Client symptoms and behaviors explored are: disorientation, confusion, decreasing ability to care for self (e.g., eating properly, bathing, grooming, getting exercise). The video clarifies the need for careful assessment of mental status and the ability to live independently. Teaching points, evaluation tools, discussion questions, and resources are offered. A script of the video is provided.
