Monmouth University

Monmouth University’s project goal was to ensure that all undergraduate social work majors have at a minimum, one 30-hour volunteer experience in an agency providing services to older people. This included that they take part in sensitivity training (approximately 2.5 hours conducted in the classroom) prior to starting the volunteer experience. The results were an increase in overall faculty interest in infusing and teaching students about older people, an increase in student awareness and ability to assess and address personal values and biases that they may have about older people, and an increase the number of students seeking to work in geriatric social work.

Courses that Included Experiential Activity:

  • Human Behavior and the Social Environment

Gero Practice Behaviors:

  • Assess and address values and biases regarding aging.
