University of North Texas
The BSW Experiential Learning (BEL) project at University of North Texas involved students in three service-learning or “pre-practicum” placements with older adults. In Phase 1, students individually interviewed an assigned participant and were trained to conduct a life review, using appropriate engagement, interviewing, and assessment skills. In Phase 2, students were responsible for planning, developing, and implementing appropriate activities for work with older adults at the mezzo level. In Phase 3, students addressed policy or community issues related to older adults and then developed organizational/community level strategies that could help meet their specified needs. Phase 4 consisted of the placement of select students in field practica that serve older adults. Select students were then eligible to receive a stipend.
The goals focused on the application of skills for students as follows. Phase 1: Students will gain enhanced micro level skills for practice with older adults Phase 2: Students will understand how to apply effective strategies for mezzo level practice with older adults Phase 3: Students will understand how to promote macro level change for older adults Phase 4: Students will apply the knowledge, values, and skills necessary to practice with older adults in an agency setting.
