Dre Johnson
MFP master’s fellow and Florida Atlantic University provost fellow Dre Johnson is conducting research with professors about the evolution of clinical social work and how social workers can play a role in preventing mass shootings in schools. Dre will present on this topic at the NASW-FL Annual Social Work Conference, to be held June 13–15 in Orlando, FL. In his internship at Broward County Public Schools Dre serves as a dependency court liaison, helping support children and families entering the foster care system by providing a link to direct services in the community and working with students to meet their mental health needs. Cheyenne Fox Tree-McGrath
Cheyenne, an MFP master’s fellow and student at Salem State University in Massachusetts, authored “Sexuality and Gender Affirmation in Transgender Men Who Have Sex With Cisgender Men” in the International Journal of Transgenderism. She is currently working on a study to consider factors affecting transition-aged youths experiencing homelessness from accessing long-term housing. Cheyenne works as a primary care social work clinician at Bedford Veterans Hospital, helping provide short-term behavioral therapy to veterans. She is also a youth worker in a transition-aged youth shelter, where she offers goal-setting and mentoring. Cheyenne hosts the podcast Queer as Duck, which focuses on topics affecting queer millennials, from media to politics. Connect with Cheyenne on LinkedIn here.
Gabrielle Aquino-Adriatico, MSW, PPSC
Gabrielle, a 2015 MFP master’s alumna, is a retention specialist at Lone Star College – University Park in Houston, TX. She works with Early Alert to help connect students to resources on and off campus to ensure all students are equipped with the skills needed to achieve their goals. Gabrielle contributed to the 2017 textbook, Ending Human Trafficking and Modern-Day Slavery: Freedom's Journey, including chapters on trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy, the survivor advocate model, and faith-based interventions. Gabrielle is grateful for the opportunity to have met with survivors who deepened her understanding of how important protective factors are in helping prevent the vicious cycle of sex trafficking. Crystal M. Hayes, MSW
Current doctoral fellow and University of Connecticut student Crystal M. Hayes recently wrote a blog post with Ms. Magazine titled “The Canary in the Coal Mine: Racism, Human Rights and Fighting for Incarcerated Pregnant Black Women” on the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. On January 30, Crystal kicked off Boston University’s #MLKforum2019 panel discussion with her presentation, “Black Women Be(en) Knowing: Making the Connection Between Reproductive Justice, Black Women’s Advocacy, and Dismantling Racism.”

Announcement: Summer Health Equity Fellowship Now Open
The Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has announced that the Youth Health Equity Model of Practice (YHEMOP) Summer 2019 Health Equity Fellowship application is now available and closes on February 22, 2019. The YHEMOP fellowship places recent graduates and currently enrolled students into short-term health equity fellowships. This fellowship helps meet the needs of diverse organizations that promote health equity and/or address health disparities. Serious Mental Health Advisor is a new website created by SAMHSA in partnership with the American Psychiatric Association. It offers expert consultation services and learning opportunities to support clinicians who provide evidence-based care for individuals living with serious mental illness.
Webinar: Mapping SBIRT to the 2015 CSWE EPAS
Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a research-based approach for identifying at-risk alcohol and substance use. This webinar recording examines how SBIRT applies to the 2015 CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) competencies and discusses how SBIRT can be integrated into the classroom.

HRSA Launches Loan Repayment Program
To combat the nation's opioid crisis, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has launched the NHSC Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program. The program supports the recruitment and retention of health professionals needed in underserved areas to expand access to substance use disorder treatment and prevent overdose deaths.
