Honoring Dr. William A. Cloud
Dr. William Cloud (MFP ’87) has devoted his career to substance abuse treatment and recovery. His research and practice spawned the recovery capital movement, which rethinks the range of resources that individuals need to recover from substance abuse. A professor at the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work, he co-founded the Bridge Project in 1991, an educational outreach program providing a path for youths in Denver's public housing neighborhoods to graduate from high school and go on to earn full scholarships to the University of Denver. Since 2001, Dr. Cloud has shared his wisdom and leadership on the MFP Doctoral Advisory Committee. As he transitions toward retirement, CSWE's MFP proudly celebrates Dr. Cloud’s career and decades of service. National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism invite prevention and treatment professionals and organizations to participate in National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) January 22–27, 2019. This week-long observance will shed light on the science behind the effects of drug and alcohol use on the brain, body, and behavior and connects students with scientists and other experts who help shatter the myths about drugs and alcohol.
It's easy to get involved! Find activity ideas, then register your event online to be featured on the official 2019 NDAFW map. NIDA staff can also help support your event planning efforts, including ordering free science-based materials to complement your event. They can also help you connect with organizations to make your event even more successful. New Mind Matters Series Teaches Teens About Drugs and the Brain
The National Institute on Drug Abuse's newly updated Mind Matters series focuses on easy-to-understand scientific facts. Developed for middle-school students and their teachers and counselors, these booklets explore how drugs such as nicotine, opioids, and marijuana affect a person’s brain, body, and life. The series is available in English and Spanish.
