Dr. Lawrence Shulman is receiving the Significant Lifetime Achievement in Social Work Education Award for his dedication to excellence in scholarship and research, pedagogy and curriculum development, and organizational leadership.
His scholarship in the areas of group work, child welfare, supervision, and teaching began 45 years ago and continues to affect social work education and practice. Globally renowned for the development of the interactional model of supervision and for articulating the concepts of William Schwartz’s mutual aid, as well as for his books A Casebook of Social Work with Groups and The Skills of Helping Individuals, Families, Groups, and Communities, Shulman is a luminary in our profession. He has authored or co-authored numerous books and monographs, which have had multiple editions and continue to be used as primary textbooks by many schools of social work globally. He is a prolific author who has published numerous scholarly articles, book chapters, and educational material (including videotape series, CDs, and DVDs) on group work, classroom teaching, field instruction, supervision, and diversity. He served as principal investigator on multiple funded research and service projects including such topics as child welfare, social practice, supervision, and the prevention of school violence. Dr. Shulman also has served as co-editor of The Clinical Supervisor: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Theory, Research, and Practice.
A consummate professional, Shulman is distinguished by his love of social work, sense of humor, valuing of colleagues, and as a stalwart to group workers. His pro bono work with students and parents with histories of violence or drug use, persons with HIV/AIDS, and vulnerable and resilient clients has been immeasurable. He is recognized as a national leader and pillar of social group work. His leadership as a former dean at the School of Social Work, University at Buffalo; with CSWE and the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups; as founder and co-chair of the International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision; as well as his community service and political activism distinguish him as worthy of this prestigious award.
